Well I thought I was going to get a chance to have a whole day off with my husband, but he is off to another fire today. He got home from his last fire assignment on Sunday and today was his first day back to work after two days of R&R. We did manage to go out for sushi Monday night and he fixed me a very nice dinner last night. I just wish that I had taken all of Monday off, but somehow I was thinking he would be home until at least next weekend. I should have known better, lol. I think he will be on the Devil’s Den fire. His engine number is over 150 so they must be ordering up a ton of resources.
More classes started up for me yesterday. Somehow I am just getting around to taking speech and psychology. I tried to take speech once before, but the teacher was a bit too new age for me. The instructor I have this time seems very good so far. It also helps that I have finally gotten over my fear of speaking in front of people. My Environmental History class is done in two weeks. That one has gone well and was very interesting. Once that is done I start a Statistics and a Fire Ecology class. Strangely I am actually looking forward to the statistics class. I always liked that math stuff. :)
I’m finally mid way through my Environmental History of the U.S. class this week. I’m glad I took this class when things are slow at work. The teacher estimated that the class should take about 9 hours a week, but I think it’s taking me closer to 12-16. Reading is between 400 – 600 pages a week and the weeks without reading have papers due. This is only my second 400 level class, and the last time I was in a history class was about 9 years ago. So far so good, I’m just glad that the writing style teachers want for history papers is very similar to writing for Women’s Studies. (My major when I was attending the U of A) Basically, quote, quote, and quote some more.
The class has been very interesting so far. We’re working our way through the years looking at how nature was viewed in different time periods. In the process we are also looking at how we view and are connected to nature. My current hypothesis is that we are most connected to nature through our consumption. The way we view nature is quite different, I’m still working on that one.
